Eligivs is a database created in 2002 useful to manage the different information related to all the mint workers. It is the sole prosopography specifically dedicated to this topic. The project for this database was developed during the research about the mint of Maccagno Inferiore, in order to classify the names of the mint masters who worked there and to follow their presence in other mints. It was then widened to all the mints, allowing the management of the information concerning the world-wide mint workers from the Ancient Times till nowadays. Through user friendly interfaces it is easy to insert the private data of each character, the different job relationships in the different mints and the signs they used to mark the coins. With the database it is possible to make complex searches or to analyze the movements of the workers from one mint to another. The results of the searches can be easily exported into printable reports. The 1.1 version of the database has been introduced to the public during the congress Monete in rete (Bologna, Museo Civico Archeologico, May 22nd 2003). The software has been now developed to handle a wider amount of data. The present 1.5.1 version has been stil improved with new search criteria and a much more efficient storing system for the pictures of mint marks. During the XIV International Numismatic Congress of Glasgow (Aug. 31st - Sept. 3rd) the new version 2.0 has been officially presented, widely improved with new search criteria and a much more efficient factoid-based storing system, to facilitate the study of the many different aspects of the lives and works of the mint officials, jointly with the new web interface for an access via the Internet. The database now contains 4,951 names, 8,194 relations between workers and mints and 1,023 mint marks (last update: February 19th 2010). The database is available on line in the Eligivs on line section of this web site. |
