Il Forrer (1902-30, I, p. 20) riporta: succeeded his father as Master of the Mint of Scotland, under James VI. By act of Parliament, 1580-81, the working of the mint was let for three years to a commission of which "Thomas Aitchesoun" was a member. In 1588 eight-penny and four-penny pieces, were struck which in contemporary documents are styled Achesouns and half-Achesouns "probably from having been the first base coinage made when this Thomas Achesoun was master of the mint, an office which he held from 1581 to 1611".

Il Forrer (1902-30, IV, p. 218) riporta: I)The working of the Mint of Edinburgh was let for three years, by Act of Parliament, 27th February 1580-81, to Alexander Clerk of Balbirnie, Provost of Edinburgh, William Napier of Wrightshouses, and four other burgesses of Edinburgh, with Thomas Aitchesoun, master of the mint, in consideration, "of ane hundreth thousand merkis promisit be the pairtneris for the yeiris tak".
